What you’ll need
To get that delicious pina colada taste you’ll only need coconut milk and pineapple juice.
And to make this smoothie even more nutritious and creamy, we’ll add some chia seeds.
That’s all you’ll need!
Coconut milk is the secret ingredient that brings a tropical creaminess to this smoothie.
You can use either canned coconut milk or the lower-fat version (the one you can commonly found alongside other milk options).
Both variations work perfectly, bringing a rich and luscious texture to this pina colada smoothie without alcohol.
I personally prefer using light coconut milk as it contains fewer calories compared to the canned version.
Additionally, canned coconut milk often has fat clumps.
But don’t worry, even the cream clumps of canned coconut milk blend easily into the smoothie.
In fact, in most pictures in this post I used canned coconut milk.
These little seeds create a smooth and velvety consistency when blended, adding a thicker texture to the smoothie.
Not to mention, they bring an additional boost of nutrients!
Use unsweetened, natural pineapple juice.
If you have unsweetened canned pineapple, you can use the juice from it as well.
I’ve found that a good ratio of coconut milk to pineapple juice is 2 parts coconut milk to 1 part pineapple juice.
This balance creates a creamy and refreshing flavor that is just right.
Benefits of drinking this pina colada smoothie
This virgin piña colada smoothie is not only delicious but also offers potential health benefits:
- Coconut milk
Studies have found that coconut, in its different forms such as flesh, milk, oil, and water, can have several health including reducing inflammation, lowering the risk of heart disease, protecting against osteoporosis, relieving constipation and digestive issues, alleviating symptoms of pancreatitis, and treating dehydration.
Also, since coconut is rich in lauric acid (a type of healthy fat that has antiviral and antibacterial properties), it could help protect against illnesses like the flu, as well as ulcers, gum disease, and throat infections.

Healthy Pina Colada Smoothie Recipe
- 1 Tbsp. Chia Seeds
- 1 Cup Coconut Milk Both canned and low-fat work well
- ½ Cup Pineapple Juice
- Let the chia seed soak in the coconut milk for at least 10 minutes (you can even let them soak overnight). After 5 minutes of soaking, give the chia a gentle stir to help them better absorb the milk.
- Blend the chia seed, coconut milk and pineapple juice until smooth.
- Don’t mind if your coconut milk still has cream clumps when soaking the chia; they will blend smoothly when you mix the ingredients.
- I calculated the calories based on canned coconut milk; opting for light coconut milk will significantly reduce the calorie content.
